Illustration Of Condition
Description
An accessory navicular bone is a congenital anomaly of the foot.
Most patients with this condition are asymptomatic (affects only
one foot) In some patients, the accessory bone causes localized
pain because is rubs against the shoe.
In these cases a change in footwear to accommodate the osseous
bump may be all that is required. A custom molded biomechanical
orthotic is usually needed to support the medial longitudinal arch.
Due to the accessory bone the medial longitudinal arch is
functionally longer and needs this support. It is estimated that
approximately 15% of these patients have surgery and a cast is
required for 6 weeks.
